The Scherzer Bridges, built in 1912 to allow water based traffic to access the Royal Canal and Spencer Docks, were also designed to keep seawater out of the docks. Invented in 1893 by William Scherzer, the bridges reduced the time for suspension of traffic while a ship passed from the 22 minutes that the old system used, to four and a half. The bridges are now non-operational.
