The Bailey is a public house which has been serving drinks since 1856. Oliver St. John Gogarty observed that it served the best whiskey and steak in Dublin, while another regular, James Joyce, referred to the pub (as 'Burtons') in the 'Lestrygonians' episode of his novel, "Ulysses". It was lunchtime when the character Leopold Bloom looked in, but on seeing the animal behaviour of the diners - one of whom was spitting back onto his plate half-masticated gristle - he decided to dine elsewhere.
