Established in 1927 as a French-Serbian company to manufacture aircraft engines, Industrija Motora Rakovica was nationalized in 1937 and produced trucks from 1940 to 1949 when the plant converted to the production of tractors. In 1954 a licensing agreement with English engine maker Perkins facilitated the switch from gasoline engines to diesel engines. With a capacity to produce 50,000 engines and 6,500 Rakovica tractors annually, the factory at one time employed 6,000 workers.
Failed efforts at privatization led to the formation of a joint venture with Industija Masina i Tractora in 2009. The company entered bankruptcy in 2015. The 47 building, 72,103 sq. m. complex was sold at auction in 2019.
