dam, dike
The Kokaral (Kok-Aral) dam was completed in 2005 and saves the North Aral Sea from drying out. It is not, however, high enough to result in return of the sea to the port of Aralsk, for which a new project will be needed to raise the height of the existing dam or build a new one. It is constructed of compacted sand with a concrete surface layer.
