A few yards into Morley's Arcade, where it does a sharp turn to the left, is a gable - this is all that remains of the Angel, one of the most important and oldest recorded inns in Leicester. Many important people stayed here, some in rather unhappy circumstances. Mary, Queen of the Scots, slept in the inn while on her way to Fotheringhaye for her 'trial' and execution on Friday 23 September 1586. Charles I also made an enforced visit on 12 February 1646 when he was being taken under guard back to London for his eventual execution. The Angel Inn was demolished in 1854.
