Founded in 1803, Riga hospital 1 is the oldest civil hospital in Latvia. In the nineteenth century this was the largest centre of medical science in the Baltic region and achieved many 'firsts' in Latvia and Russia, such as the first department of surgery (1834), therapeutic department (1834), operation with anaesthesia (1847), department of neurosurgery (1875) department of infectious diseases (1883), outpatient clinic (1891) and x-ray department (1898). The present building was erected in 1905 to the design of Reinhold Schmaeling.
