Joseph's Menswear

The building on the corner of High Street and Carts Lane was designed by Albert Sawday
and built in 1902. Now occupied by a mens' wear shop, is on the site of Butler's New Dry Store, which was considered one of Britain's finest retail pharmacies of its day.
On the wall, salvaged from the original building, are two decorative advertising panels made from Doulton tiles. The upper one includes a likeness of Thomas Butler, the founder of the firm, who is represented as an alchemist with the legend Chemists by Examination. The lower panel, which features a vessel in full sail, is an advertisement for the saline headache tonic 'Sea Breeze'.
A few yards into Carts Lane there is an iron gate with the legend 'Butlers Goods Entrance'.
