  • My family lived in Moston. The clough was my childhood playground 69 yrs ago. On Sundays families in their best clothes walked there together. My Father taught me to how to row a boat on the lake, and then I used to hire a skiff for one shilling an hour.. I must have climbed 100s of trees in those fields and explored all the valleys. I knew all the places where birds nested, and the old roman bridge , near the White Walk. I was told by older people then, that The Clough itself was an ancient glacier path, the valleys emptied into the glacier which in the ice age ran from Grange (Charlestown Rd.) right down the now main path to the area of the refreshment room and beyond, down through Blackley village. The stream which now runs along that same route is all that's let of that history. My parents told me that a huge stone along the main path, which used to be surrounded with crocuses in spring was "a giant's footstool". Probably it was a left over boulder same as the one on a corner of Bluestone rd. nr Lily Lane school. I am glad that people now take such interest in that lovely place, Manchester was late to recognise it , it was neglected for so long.
