Leicester Secular Hall (Leicester)

United Kingdom / England / Leicester / Humberstone Gate
Grade II Listed (UK)  Add category

The Leicester Secular Hall (the only secularist institution still surviving outside London) was designed by W Larner Sugden and opened on Sunday 6 March 1881.

The brick building, Flemish renaissance in style, has a ground floor of buff Darley Dale stone and an upper storey of brownish red Coalville bricks with projections of red Mansfield stone. Adorning the front of the building are five terracotta busts, created by A L Vago, representing historic free-thinkers who revolted against priestly pretensions and who worked for a happier social environment. Those depicted are: Voltaire, Thomas Paine, Robert Owen, Jesus Christ and Socrates.
