historical building, Grade II Listed (UK)
This majestic building, with its wonderful slated dome, was designed by Edward Burgess and opened by the Duchess of Rutland in December 1888. It is built of Santon stone with walls of polished Aberdeen granite; the staircases are lined with glazed tiles. It was one of twelve premises built for the Leicester Coffee and Cocoa House Company, which had been formed in 1877. The company, which went out of business in 1922, was closely linked with the temperance movement and operated on commercial lines as an alternative to the public house. It is Grade II listed.
