Ratnāgiri is a port city on the Arabian Sea coast in Ratnagiri district in the southwestern part of Maharashtra, India. The district is a part of Konkan.
The Sahyadri mountains border Ratnagiri on its west. Heavy rainfall results in highly eroded landscape in the coastal region, but fertile alluvial valleys in the region produce abundant rice, coconuts, cashew nuts, and fruits, delicious "Hāpus" (Alphonso) mangoes being one of the main fruits. Fishing is an important industry in Ratnagiri.

A few illustrious Indians, including "Lokmānya" Bal Gangadhar Tilak, a prime leader in the nation's freedom movement in the British Raj days; Bharat Ratna "Maharshi" Dhondo Kehav Karve, an eminent social reformer and educationist; and Wrangler Raghunath Purushottam Paranjpe, a mathematician and educationist, were born in Ratnagiri or its vicinity.

    I've got nothing good to say about ratnagiri - well, there are beautyfull beaches - but only used as toilets -sad, but i have got no problem with that. BUT: the majority (there where exceptians) of the people seems are not used to foreighners and they give you the feeling , they don't want you there at all.there realy is a negative atmosphere you feel in the city. The hotels where mutch to expencive for indian standards and the quality was bad. maybe because if you once reached the city it's not so easy to leave again:) There wasn' a place after and before in india where i had met so many unhelpfull and unfriendly people. So all in all there is no need to visit the city to get an impression by yourself - it's not worth it.

    RATNAGIRI is my Home Town. Ratna means Diamond & Giri means Falls. Its a Diamond Falls place. A World Famous ALPHONSO Mango of RATNAGIRI is Miraculous. So many Beaches and Tourist places fascinating to lot of Visitors. Further it has pollution free agricultural zone. Moreover our RATNAGIRI of Konkan region is one of the Cosmopolitans City!!!... Yes obviously R A T N A G I R I is very very and too much PEACEFUL. bye...
