The Cove was named Saint Gabriel Cove in honor of Vitus Bering's Ship, "The Saint Gabriel". (During Soviet time Saints were expunged from geographical names, so now it is simply Gabriel Cove). It was in 1728 that Bering sailed along the shore of Chukotka and the Bering Strait. One of the first meteorological stations of Chukotka was situated in the Gabrial Cove.
