Second World War 1939-1945, war memorial
In memory of the 21,853 Japanese soldiers and sailors who died in the epic battle of 1945. An estimated 13,330 Japanese are still "missing in action," buried in the many miles of tunnels and underground bunkers which honeycomb the whole island.
On 19 February 1985, the fortieth anniversary of the invasion, American and Japanese survivors returned to the island for the Reunion of Honor ceremony. For that occasion Japanese and American veterans groups put up a joint monument, inscribed in Japanese and English, on the high ground directly overlooking the invasion beach.
