Programs and Services

In addition to providing shelter, medical care, training, plenty of TLC, and ultimately new homes for Chittenden County's neediest animals each year, HSCC also offers the following programs:

Spay/Neuter Program: Ensures that every animal adopted from HSCC is spayed or neutered before going to their new home. In 2005, we spayed or neutered 389 animals, representing 27% of the animals who were in our care during the year.

Foster Care Program: Provides the extra TLC needed for animals who are sick, injured, or too young for adoption.

Lost and Found Program: Gives our community a central location where lost and found reports can be made. As this service becomes more and more known, we are increasingly the first stop for people who have lost or found an animal.

Humane Education Program: Includes Camp Paw Paw, which is geared toward the young people in our community and helping to educate them about animal care and welfare. This is a day camp for 9 to 12 year olds and is being offered during most school breaks throughout the year. Humane Education also involves tours of and visits to our shelter by hundreds of children of all ages from area scout troops, civic clubs, and schools.

Humane Investigations: In the past three years, has involved our staff responding to more than 250 reports of suspected cruel and inhumane treatment of animals in Chittenden County. Each time we respond to such a call, we use the opportunity, when appropriate, to educate and provide information and supplies to help promote responsible pet care. When the circumstances dictate, we will involve the proper authorities to remove an animal from a dangerous or unsafe situation.

Good Neighbor Program: A partnership we have established with homeless, domestic violence, and other local human service organizations to provide temporary shelter, free of charge, for beloved pets during times of crisis and transition in the lives of their owners.

S.A.V.E. PROGRAM: We are fortunate to have the support of many area veterinarians in our Shelter Area Veterinary Exam Program. By volunteering their time to provide needed veterinary care to HSCC's animals, they help us to ensure that each animal receives the best possible care.

Senior Pet Program: We recognize the value of our senior and not quite so senior pets! They are better trained and more mature than rambunctious and sometimes destructive puppies and kittens. As an incentive to get people to adopt our more senior pets, we offer discounts on the adoption fee for elder pets.

Purina Pets For People Program: This program encourages people over 60 years old to adopt a pet from the shelter. Purina pays part of the adoption fee. We are the only shelter in Vermont to offer this program.

Pet Information & Referrals: To help prevent animals from being given up due to behavioral problems, we provide advice and information to help pet owners solve or avoid common pet problems. We also refer pet owners to area pet training professionals.
