This remote upland tarn is set in a shallow moorland basin between the valleys of Kentmere and Longsleddale. It's likely that the area around it was once a managed grouse moor.
Lonely Skeggleswater receives few visitors. Those that come are often on mountain bikes, or are interested in the diatomicious mud that forms the tarn floor. There was brief concern in the early 1970s that the tarn might be dredged for its diatomite, but nothing came of it.
