monument, interesting place
This column was built in 1806 to honor the Prussian king Frederick William II. After the death of the king in 1797, there was already a wood and plaster monument at this site, and by 1800 plans had been made to create a permanent memorial. When the wooden column burned down in 1805 because of a fire caused by a smoker, it was replaced by the current monument. It consists of a tall, neoclassical tower with a viewing platform at the top. The monument was formerly crowned with a statue of the king, but this was pulled down and melted after WWII because of its German-ness. Currently, the tower is walled of and abandoned.
