For a total of 29 years and 8 Jamborees the U.S. Army hosted the Boy Scouts on several thousand acres every 4 years between 1981 and 2010. Started in the face of renewed Soviet aggression and a nadir in troop quality, the DoD's involvement was a way to drum up enthusiasm for the all volunteer armed forces in the post-Vietnam period.

In 2008 the BSA announced that they were looking for a new permanent jamboree location and high adventure base that would be capable of hosting a World Scout Jamboree and could relieve the high demand for the three existing high adventure bases. In 2009 the BSA selected 10,600 acres in Mount Hope, West Virginia for the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve, made possible by several large donations.
