The Roman building is located in the south -west of the town of Fano (PU) .
Commonly known as the " Arch of Augustus " , the Door of the main entrance to the city it is the most noteworthy of the Colonia Julia Fanestris .
La Porta, white limestone of Monte Nero, is divided into a central arch higher , laying the keystone decorated in relief and two smaller arches now closed to transit. The date of construction , obtainable by the inscription on the frieze, is not earlier than 9 AD
The Arch , which rises in the exact spot where the Consular Road Flamina , opened by the censor Gaius Flaminius around 220 BC, is engaged in the Cardo Maximus of the city, is part of the complex work of monumental city built by the Emperor Augustus.
In the fourth century A.D. the main entrance underwent further interventions. On the frieze of the attic you wanted to engrave a dedication to the deceased Emperor Constantine. The chronological reference ( 337 shortly after the death of Constantine ) coincides with the other inscription , in smaller type , on the frieze of the monument.
