When WWII Nazi extermination camp was being scaled down prior to wartime closure, there was an attempt called Sonderaktion 1005 (special action 1005) to conceal the physical evidence of the mass-killings ---no easy task. Inmate-laborers were made to dig up mass graves closest to the surface and burn the remains on improvised roasting platforms and then to run the larger pieces of clinker through a portable bone-crusher mill set up here. The mill was sent along to a different camp when Sonderaktion 1005 wrapped up at Belzec.
