In 1875 it was decided to build a new city district to the east of the Brussels Pentagon. The urban planner Gédéon Bordiau was the designer of this district. The district was built up during the 1980s, which was completed around 1895. In 1896 a new parish was founded here, dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The first Sacred Heart Church was located at Notelaarstraat 20 and had a provisional character. It was used until 1909. Initially, a monumental Sacred Heart Church would be built on the Margarethaplantsoen. Ultimately, this church, the National Basilica of the Sacred Heart, was built in Koekelberg. The foundation stone was laid in 1905, but it was not dedicated until 1951.

A new Sacred Heart Church was built in the district from 1907-1909. This was designed by Victor Janssen, who came from Sint-Joost-ten-Node. It remained in use until 1956.
