Oranienbaum was the Country residence of Peter the Great's Minister and friend Menshikov.

The central pavilion of the Great Palace was built in the years 1710-1727 in the style often refered to as Peter's Baroque. During Peter the Great's reign large amounts of civil engineering were undertaken with many administrative, industrial and military buildings appearing in St. Petersburg and its environs.

Following Menshikov's discrace and downfall, this property was confiscated and eventually served as the country residence of the heir to the throne [later Peter III] and his wife Catherine [later Catherine the Great]. During this period it was extended and several pavilion built in the gardens.

The Great Palace faces north towards the Gulf. It's curved wings are terminated in domed pavilions. To the south is the large orangery garden from which the palace takes its name oraniebaum. It is now a museum and the centre of an arts complex.
