The Primary School consists of Key Stage 1 (5 to 7 years) and Key Stage 2 (7 to 11 years). In addition to adopting the syllabi and using text books published in the UK, all students of Gateway are presented for the Key Stage Tests similar to any school going child in the UK. These non-competitive tests conducted by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority of UK, are for benchmarking and diagnostic purposes and are held at the end of each Key Stage – at Year 2 and Year 6. At Key Stage 1, all classes are supported with two teachers. The staff at Key Stage 2 consists of many subject specialists.

In addition to meeting the requirements of the English National Curriculum, we have encompassed other aspects of learning to provide our children the necessary exposure to values and traditions of Sri Lanka. The subject areas covered at this level include:

Core subjects: English, Mathematics, Science

Foundation subjects: Information & Communication Technology (ICT), Design and Technology (D&T), History, Geography, Art & Design, Music, Physical Education, Modern Foreign Language (French)

Others: Sinhala, Tamil, Drama, Oriental Dance, Religion (Buddhism/ Christianity/ Roman Catholisism/ Islam/ Hinduism)

The History and Geography curriculum in all three Key Stages has a Sri Lankan component introduced such that the students learn about their own country in addition to Europe and the rest of the world.

Primary school is equipped with a modern child friendly library, a Science laboratory, a Design and Technology laboratory, a room for Art and Crafts, a Dance room, a Drama room, an Auditorium, Music rooms and several ICT suites. Beautifully landscaped play areas are a special feature of the school.

It is encouraging to see our students reaching high levels of achievement at the Key Stage tests of the English National curriculum. Majority of our students reach Level 3 in Mathematics at Key Stage 1 and Levels 5 in Mathematics and Science at Key Stage 2, the highest achievable in the respective examinations. The most satisfying achievement, however, is the improvement in English at both Key Stages where levels of achievement are reaching a close parallel to the other two core subjects. Even though English is the second language to many of our students, we have been able to reach such levels due to the introduction of several strategies such as the 100 Literacy hours and several other initiatives that encourage reading, creative writing etc.. It is pleasing to note that our results of the Key Stage tests are comparable only to the best of independent schools in the United Kingdom.

The ICT programme of the Gateway Kids School of Computing is incorporated into the school curriculum. Through this well structured programme that has an international reach, students are able to receive certification from NCC Education, UK at the end of every academic year.
