Gould Island

USA / Rhode Island / Tiverton /

One of two "Gould Islands" located in Narragannsett Bay. This island is currently owned by the Audubon society and is a protected nesting site for a variety of species of bird. A dance hall run by the now defunct Island Park Amusement Park in Portsmouth once existed on the island. During the revolutionary war American troops stationed in Tiverton, RI ran a look out station from Gould Island to spot British warships moving up the Sakonnet River.

  • Gould Island in Tiverton RI wad donated to the Audubon Society in 1970 by my late grandmother, Helen Lawton Hathaway of Tiverton, RI. Helen was the wife of Wallace Hathaway, who ran a successful CPA firm and was on the Board of Directors of several area banks, including Durfee National Bank in Fall River, MA. Helen was also the granddaughter of Daniel T church, a successful businessman, that at one time, along with other members of the Church family, owned a large portion of the town of Tiverton, RI.
