Shaw Air Force Base is home to the Air Force's largest combat F-16 wing -- the 20th Fighter Wing -- whose mission is to provide, project and sustain combat-ready air forces. Shaw also serves as home to Headquarters Ninth Air Force and U.S. Central Command Air Forces (USCENTAF), whose primary mission is to project decisive air and space power for U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) and America

Shaw AFB is currently host to 3 squadrons of Lockheed-Martin F-16C & F-16D fighter aircraft under the Air Combat Command and is the headquarters location for the 9th Air Force under the Air Forces Central Command. It is also home to Operation Noble Eagle, which hosts multiple fighter aircraft on 24-hour alert as part of the eastern seaboard defense mission. The base features a newly developed baseball/softball fields, a rifle/skeet range, outdoor recreational center with campground, and golf course. It is currently undergoing new development for Housing and Dormitories, as well as a new Exchange/Commissary shopping center.
