The original man-made elements of La Junta's city park were constructed by the Works Progress Administration and the Civil Works Administration, two New Deal programs that operated between 1935 and 1943 (The CWA specifically during the winter of 1934/35). The programs provided work for unemployed people who were struggling to find jobs during the Great Depression.
