Late Capt. Fakir Mohammed Juvale, recipient of Padma Shri award in 1981, was the first Indian Master Mariner, and the pioneer to start the first Nautical School in India during the British Raj. He built his beautiful dream bungalow symmetrically on top of a hill in 1932, to enjoy the beauty of nature, surrounded by exotic fruit (including Alphonso mango) trees, wide range of flower plants, and a seasonal vegetable garden. He also built a water fountain on the site. One could get a panoramic view of the entire Kadwai villge from this bungalow. To access the bungalow one has to climb 100 steps from the bottom of the hill. This bungalow is considered as a tourist spot and has attracted many VIP dignitaries in the past.

  • Thanks Abdul Munaf for your comments and the esteemed respect you have for my late grandfather Padma Shri Capt. Fakir Mohamed Juvale. We all are very proud of his achievements. With little (Marathi), or almost no schooling, he rose to the rank of Master Mariner, from a lowly lascar boy. After obtaining his Master's Certificate, he was the pioneer to start the 1st Nautical School in India in 1923, during the British Raj. He proved the British wrong, about their views, that Indians were only fit to serve as a crew, but could not be good Marine Officers. He took it as a challenge. Due to his pioneering efforts, he was mainly instrumental in putting the name of the Indian Marine officers on the map of the International shipping world. Today Indian Marine officers, are much sought after, all across the globe, and making India proud, with their performance. In 1981, the then Indian government, belatedly recognised my grandfather's contribution to Indian shipping, and honoured him with a national award (Padma Shri) at the ripe old age of 91, and later also named an Indian ship after him. I agree with your comments that he did not get the recognition he deserved, in the very place, he made proud. Glad to know that you got a big opportunity, just by mentioning my grandfather's name. Wish you all the best. Salaams, Capt. Zainul Abidin Juvale, Auckland, N.Z.
