Only one side of Five Mile is concrete, and the bottom is not, while One Mile is completely concrete with a concrete bottom that is cleaned once a week during the summer. It is called "Five Mile" because it is five miles up Big Chico Creek from Bidwell Mansion.

"At the foot of Upper Bidwell Park, Five-Mile is either a kicking-off point for sojurns into the canyon[Upper Bidwell Park] or a great picnic destination on its own. Picnic tables, barbecues and ample space make it a popular spot, along with One-Mile, for large group gatherings. Take Vallombrosa to the end, turn right on Manzanita, left on Centennial, and the park is to the left."

"In Upper Park, there's swimming at Five Mile Recreation Area, at the swimming holes and various other spots along the Yahi Trail. Some have shallow water areas and sandy beaches. The upstream swimming areas tend to be most popular for older teens and young adults. Isolated swimming areas are more likely[still not very likely] to have nude swimmers so if nudity bothers you or your kids, stick to the downstream spots[One Mile and Five Mile, because they are more popular with more people at them, especially during the summer]. Every year, people are injured when they dive into the creek. A pool of water may look deep, but there are hidden rocks in many areas.":
