The bronze life-size statue of a steed was presented to Yasukuni Shrine in 1958, to honour the horses who served the military. A plaque is mounted on a support made of horseshoes. The figure of a pigeon atop of a globe honors the messenger pigeons, it was presented to the shrine in 1982. The statue of a German shepherd (also bronze and lifesize) was donated to the shrine in 1992.
Every year on April 7 a memorial service for the horses is held in Yasukuni Shrine.
