James Powe and his family homesteaded in this area in 1893, although they had arrived in Saskatoon from Ontario in 1884. They built this home on that homestead between 1912 and 1914. The foundation was built of local fieldstone resulting in basement walls that are between 19 and 24 inches thick. The house was completely wired when it was built, with electricity coming from twelve two-volt batteries in the basement that were charged by a gas generator. The house was apparently modeled after a home on University Drive , with a spacious verandah, and a dormer window on either side of the roof.
In 1888, James Powe was listed as being a builder, carpenter and maker of coffins!
