The crater might be as much as 97 to over 3000million years old. Scientists are still debating the time line. The buried feature is a circular structure, 4.5 miles (7.24 km) in diameter. The up-turned dolomitic rock layers being mined since the 19th century are actually outside the area of the original crater. Thus the circle seen does not represent the true crater.
