Caledonia State Park gets its name from Caledonia Furnace, a charcoal iron works built on this site in 1837 by Thaddeus Stevens. Stevens is remembered as a leading "Radical Republican" congressman and father of Pennsylvania's public schools. A few remains and reminders of the iron works are on the park grounds, including a replica of the furnace stack.

The park is open to hunting, fishing, swimming and golf. There are 10 miles of hiking trails including a segment of the Appalachian Trail.

Since 1950, the park has hosted the Totem Pole Playhouse, a summer stock theater which has occasionally featured such notable thespians as John Ritter, Jean Stapleton, Sandy Dennis and the guy who played "Booger" in the Revenge of the Nerds movies.
