The locality is popularly known as 'Kharkar Alley' for the reasons that almost more than 18 families with surname 'Kharkar' (all falling under the same ancestry tree) were dwelling in this locality having huge houses most of it made of teak-wood. Kharkars's were the original owners of village Kharigaon next to Kalwa on the eastern side of Thane Creek. Most of the Kharkar families rich and had high social status as they were highly educated and working at good positions in government and princely States at high posts. Therefore the families left Kharigaon and settled in this locality in the city of Thane.
Famous amongst Kharkars were Diwan if Jamnagar, Justice Kharkar, Balkrishna Kharkar also known as Dnyatimanya Tatyasaheb Kharkar.
Most of the people dwelling in this locality belonged to the CKP or brahmin Community, including the Kharkar families.
Other famous families dwelling in this locality were Adv.Sir Govindrao Pradhan, Adv.Chitnis, Bhise-Inamdars, Adv.Pradhan, Adv.Nadkarni,
However at present the old houses have been demolished and towers have come up having a cosmopolitan crowd.
