I still have unopened the gift of a bottle of 1979 'Urtziger Schwartzlay Kabinett' white wine specially selected for the 2nd BN. Royal Anglian Regiment. I was sure they were situated at Spandau and having googled the Regiments name on the bottle it seems I was right. Great experiences and always well looked after by the lads.

  • My son was born there in 1972 I worked part of my time in the brig canoe club. We lived for a while in the mobile homes at the back of the Naafi. I used to chain the safety boat up in Kladow and be in work 15 minutes later or go by bus and walk 1 and 3/4 hrs on a bad day and 3/4 on a good on. Rocking horse was a pain in the arse. I used to be at the canoe club even if I wasn't.
  • my Dad was stationed here with 1WFR in 1972 - 74 (?) I have fond memories of it myself. Peter Wiltshire was his name, I've got a photo of him talking to Prince Charles whislt on Parade. If I remember rightly he was a Sergeant at the time, might even have been RMP, I can remember being around the guard room a lot anyhow lol
  • Was stationed twice in Berlin with 1st Bn. R.R.W 1974-1976 and 1st Bn. R.H.F 1984-1986 and I can honestly say it was far better the 2nd time around.....Even my wife Sally loved it. But what a city it was vibrant and full of character....
  • I was stationed in Montgomery Barracks (Berlin-Kladow) with the 1st Bn Grenadier Guards from March 1954 until September 1955 with The Berlin Independent Brigade. We took over from the 1st Bn Scots Fusiliers, and handed over to the 1st Bn Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. I had a very nice married Quarter at the rear of the Barracks in Pottensteiner Weg, about 100 yards from the Russian Wire........that MQ gave me my introduction to the Dutch Oven system of Heating - a huge tiled block in the corner of the room from floor to almost ceiling level, with a small midway opening and grate into which was lit the fire using those small blocks of brown coal. Most Berliners were still suffering the employment restrictions and housing shortages caused by the recent WWII and help in reconstruction was being given by an American led Initiative named 'Op-Union' for the purpose of rebuilding Berlin and creating employement for the hard pressed Berliners. For the first time in my life because of Op Union, I enjoyed the services of a daily home help for the token payment of a mere 7 shillings a wek on my part........this lasted throughout our stay when we moved into the Western Zone until we eventually left BAOR for Blighty in late 1957........happy days!
