Ethiopia / Amhara / Kembolcha /

Kombolcha (Amharic: ኮምቦልቻ) is a city and woreda in north-central Ethiopia. Located in the Debub Wollo Zone of the Amhara Region, it has a latitude and longitude of 11°5′N 39°44′E with an elevation between 1842 and 1915 meters above sea level. Some guide books describe Kombolcha as the twin city of Dessie which lies some 13 km to the northwest. Tadesse Tamrat records that archeologists discovered "some remains of Christian settlements", dated to the late first millennium of the current era.
Kombolcha became affected by the Tigray War as the troops of the Tigray Region crossed into Amhara region at the middle of 2021, in order to push back Abiy Ahmed's final offensive. There was weeks of fighting north of Kombolcha and on 31 October 2021, it was reported this city has fallen to the Tigray Defence Forces. This has been a significant development, since Ethiopia has been conducting an offensive on the TDF, but in the end the strategic town of Kombolcha has fallen into the hands of the Tigray forces.
