Intersection of Cherry Creek and Highline Canal (Denver, Colorado)

Cherry Creek runs due east-west through the image, while Highline Canal is visible at the northeast and southwest corners of the image. The Cherry Creek and Highline Canal bike trails also intersect here.

The Highline Canal flows under Cherry Creek via a siphon, which is marked on USGS topographic maps of the area. The concrete structures at the endpoints of the siphon are easily seen. For those who don't know this, it's a topographical curiosity. The Highline Canal flows from near Chatfield Reservoir all the way to Aurora, but the elevation drop is very gradual, so elevation changes seem minor while along the bike path which parallels it. Because the canal must keep its downhill gradient (since water doens't run uphill), it snakes back and forth quite a bit as it makes its way through the Denver metro area.
