Thousands of people travel through this national monument's borders on Interstate 10 without ever being aware of its existence; it is closed to the public and only accessible with the permission of the Gila River Indian Community. A National Monument since 1972, it contains the Hohokam archaeological site known as Snaketown, excavated in 1934 and again in 1964-1965.

The Snaketown site has been backfilled to protect it from natural forces (and vandals); a scale model can be found at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, and artifacts unearthed here can be found at the museum at Casa Grande National Monument in Coolidge.

The only hint to its existence for most passersby is the overpass aptly labeled as "Snaketown Road".
