American Civil War fort which, along with a line of rifle pits and redoubts stretching across the Peninsula, was intended to prevent the McClellan's Union Army's advance on Richmond during the Peninsular campaign in 1862.

It was the site of the first major battle of the campaign on May 5, 1862.

The earthen fort was named for Gen. "Prince John" Magruder, the flamboyant Confederate general who was able to bottle up McClellan's massive army for weeks with a much smaller force by using trickery and subterfuge that made the paranoid Little Mac think he was facing the entire might of the Southern Army.
