Temple of Jupiter (Damascus)

Syria / Damaskus / Damascus
 temple, arch, ruins

The ruins of the Roman Temple of Jupiter is located near the entrance of the Umayyad Mosque and Souq al-Hamidiyah. Construction began during the rule of Augustus and was completed under Constantius II. It was built on the site of an older Aramaean temple to Hadad, whom the Romans conflated with Jupiter after conquering the city. The "arch" is therefore a monumental gateway or propylaeum.
