  • I lived at Loloma Village as a child from 1939 to 1943. The village was a typical mining town built by the Loloma Gold Mine which was part of this overall mining complex. Red Ted Theadore was Chairman of the Board and Bruiser Nielson was General Manager. My father Douglas Harvey Laing was Mill Manager and my uncle Wally Conroy was Mine Manager. We were evacuated from Suva by the British Colonial Administration in April of 1943 on the MV Martua as the Japanese advanced in the Pacific. I think our company house is somewhere in this larger image. I loved Fiji and spoke quite good Fijian. I hope someday that Fiji can be a peaceful place where all of its people can live happily together and in a reasonable state of prosperity. Dougals Laing Cali Colombia <douglaslaing@yahoo.co.uk>
