The Cape Hatteras lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the United States at 225 feet and was built in 1869. Its beacon is visible for up to 20 miles. The lighthouse is open to the public and the 268 stairs of the spiral staircase that take visitors to the top comprise an endeavor well worth the expansive view of the Atlantic shoreline that awaits at the top.
