Formerly one of the largest and most important industrial towns in Scotland (it had the first freight rail link in Scotland), Kilmarnock is in long-term decline, although it has enjoyed a slight revival as a commuter satellite to Glasgow. Home of Johnny Walker whisky and a key part of the Robert Burns historical trail (many of Burns' poems were published in the Kilmarnock edition). the name Kilmarncok is derived from the Gaelic 'Cill Mhearnaig', meaning 'church of St Marnock'. He is believed to have travelled from Ireland to bring christianity to the west coast of Scotland.
