This stupa is similar in design to the main stupa, though smaller in size. The hemispherical dome is crowned, as a mark of its special religious significance, with an umbrella of polished stone. This structure belongs to the period between 150-140 BC. It has only one gateway and is thought to have been constructed soon after the completion of the main stupa.
This stupa once contained relics of the two important disciples of the Buddha, Shariputra and Moggallana. They were removed and taken to London in 1853, but returned to Sanchi 100 years later, in 1953, and are now enshrined in the nearby Chetiyagiri Vihara.
