Kenansville

USA / Florida / Yeehaw Junction /

Kenansville is a small town located at the junction of Osceola County Road 523 and U.S. Highway 441 in Osceola County. The town originally named "Whittier", was named for Mary Lily Kenan Flagler (from Kenansville, North Carolina), the wife of the prominent railroad entrepreneur Henry Morrison Flagler, after the railroad was developed through the area. The railroad line was dissolved in 1947, and thus, much of the activity in the area declined.

Once a semi-successful town whose economic activity revolved around cattle, Kenansville proved to be too far off the beaten path to be a viable community, especially since the Florida Turnpike bypasses the town, with no direct exit ramp to the area.

When visiting Kenansville recently I suggested to the cashier in the convenience store that the town has nearly reached ghost town status. Her pithy reply was "ghost town my butt!"

    How many People Live there?

Wikipedia states there are about 1000 residents (no source at the time of this comment), but that would definitely include the greater surrounding area of town. Since the nearest towns are Holopaw and Yeehaw Junction, that is quite possible; the town "center" of Kenansville appears to have a fraction of that number.

What I left out was that the cashier's next statement was that about 100,000 people live around there. The other girl at the counter suggested she had over estimated by about 99,900 people. I then found out that for fun in Kenansville you either "do crystal meth" or go to the St. Cloud Wal-Mart. Kenansville is a "ghost" of its former self with no down town, no post-office, no school and no bank anymore. In my estimation that qualifies it for the write up it received on www.ghosttowns.com
