Old wooden shop houses in the township of Kinarut. Kinarut is one of three places in the State of Sabah, Malaysia with "Kina" as part of its name. The other two are Mt. Kinabalu, the highest mountain in South East Asia, and Kinabatangan River, the longest river in Sabah. There used to be an old fort in Kinarut that was built as defence against attacks from invaders who used to sail into the waters around Kinarut.

  • The term "Kina" means "Chinese" but I don't know how it relates to "Kinarut". The aggressors were pirates.
