In February 2000, the new BMW Group Engineering and Emission Test Center was opened in Oxnard, California, directly before the portals of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. As a partner of the BMW Group Research and Innovation Center’s development department, the primary assignment of the center’s circa 60 employees is the functional and continuous testing of vehicles and components under conditions typical to the US and under extremely high environmental standards. In addition, the Test Center houses a laboratory which utilizes the most modern technology available to test the emissions of today’s as well as tomorrow’s vehicles. Together with the California BMW Group’s Technology Office Palo Alto and Designworks in Newbury Park, the Oxnard Center forms the California Innovation Triangle (CIT), in which independent, advanced development projects are created with short lead-time.
In July 2001, the BMW CleanEnergy WorldTour came to Oxnard. The BMW Group presented its hydrogen-powered automobile with internal combustion engine in the heartland of emission control laws. The hydrogen 'gas' station at the Engineering and Emission Test Center in Oxnard, directly before the portals of Los Angeles, is designed to be the cornerstone in the introduction of hydrogen as the fuel of the future in California and the USA.
