This facility was built by the Navy in the 40's to conduct RADAR experiments. They also conduct fire experiments (simulating the interiors of ships, for example). There is a facility on Tilghman Island used by this group (Coordinates: 38°40'42"N 76°20'37"W).

  • I went there once (on business) about 2004. They had a big tank, about the size of a propane tank you'd see outside a large store. But this tank was labeled "tritium"! I found it hard to believe that there had ever been that much tritium in one place!! My first worry was the radioactivity (if it really were filled with tritium), but I quickly realized that a simple explosion would do more damage. Not to worry, 90% of the 20 million propane tanks around the USA are probably in worse shape and more of a hazard.
