This cemetery has an interesting history. Originally maintained through the years as a burial ground for former slaves by former slaves and their successors, the cemetery was deeded to the City of Frederick in 1949 as the group no longer had the ability to maintain the site. The city promptly removed the remaining headstones, and paved over the area to make a playground. It wasn't until the year 2000 that the city made amends and restored the area as a memorial park.

  • Specifically it's called the Laboring Sons' Memorial Grounds, but yes, that's what it is.
