Washington Confederate Cemetery is contained within the grounds of Rose Hill Cemetery. Many of the over 2,000 confederate soldiers buried here were re-internments from smaller cemeteries and mass graves around Washington County. These were the casualties of fighting in the battles of South Mountain and Antietam, with some associated with the Confederate retreat from Gettysburg. Of the 2,000 soldiers buried here, only 346 could be identified.
Hiram Percy Maxim, the father of organized amateur, and the founder of the American Radio Relay League is interred in Rose Hill Cemetery. His amateur radio call-sign was W1AW. Maxim was also the inventor of the Maxim silencer which was the first mass produced firearms silencer, the automobile muffler, and he was a pioneer in air compressor technology. Hiram's grave is marked very simply. Section K, plot 75. Ask at the cemetery office for more specific details, they can provide you with a map of the cemtery to help in your search.
