The openings in the forest canopy visible in this region are the result of experimental group selection harvesting by foresters at Quabbin Reservoir, designed to stimulate regeneration of oaks and other species. The openings in the northern and southern ends of this place range in size from 0.1 acre to 0.5 acre, while the clearing in the center was a patch removal of several acres of overstory forest.
