This checkerboard pattern in the watershed forest at Quabbin Reservoir is a block of spruce plantations that were partially harvested using a patch selection silvicultural system. Spruce is extremely dense and difficult to thin, so foresters at Quabbin removed patches in these maturing plantations to stimulate regeneration of a wider range of native species.
